What is
IMDS?
IMDS is short for
International
Material Data System.
IMDS is the material
data system used by automobile manufacturers
and their suppliers to comply with the End of
Life Vehicle directive which facilitates the recyling of old
autos. All data is entered
into an online database maintained by Electronic Data Systems at www.mdsystem.com.
After companies register with IMDS and designate one or more client managers,
access to the system is by user name and password.
Materials, components
and semi-components are reported at the substance level. The IMDS substance list
identifies over 8,000 substances by name and CAS number (a unique
identifier issued by the American Chemical Society). Prohibited and
declarable substances as listed on the
GADSL
are also identified. Up to 10% by weight may be classified as "not
specified" substance for proprietary confidentiality.
Currently parts are
"proposed"
to the system by the supplier and then accepted or rejected by the
customer. Common errors include using the wrong part numbers or sending
data to the wrong recipient. But the most common error is not conforming
to the published data format recommendations.
