What
Not to Do for Compliance
RSJ Technical
Consulting realizes that the cacophony of environmental regulations
across the world can be overwhelming. Sometimes we feel that way, too.
But mostly we focus on turning a cost (environmental compliance) into a
competitive advantage for better, more reliable products.
|
In our
experience, these are common manufacturer approaches to
environmental compliance that lead to
non-compliant products: |
 |
Passing the buck to suppliers: this
is the "see no evil, hear no evil" approach that places undue
reliance on supplier certificates of compliance (CofC). You need
to know what is in your products, down to the lowest levels. |
 |
Not understanding the regulations/directives/exemptions:
ignorance of the law is no defense, and if you ignore it, it
won't go away. You need to know how each regulation (its scope,
exceptions and exemptions) will apply to your products. |
 |
Reactive management: environmental
compliance becomes unmanageable and prohibitively expensive when
addressed as a series of ad hoc measures focused on the
hot-button "regulation of the moment." You need a unified
approach to handling all the global regulations. |
 |
Delayed response: there isn't as
much time as you think there is. It takes years to substitute
materials, adapt manufacturing processes, phase-in new product
lines, and establish adequate business processes and
manufacturing controls. |
 |
Careless component specification and
procurement: environmental compliance requirements must
be written into your specifications for components and materials
at every level. |
 |
Lack of supplier due diligence:
environmental compliance requires that you hold your suppliers
to the same level of compliance and due diligence that you have
implemented in your own operations. |
 |
Inadequate data management/control:
changes in materials, in components, in suppliers and in
products are a given in manufacturing. You need to be able to
document your product's compliance at every step through every
change. |
If you want to avoid
this manufacturer's "short list of things not to do," RSJ'

manufacturers implement environmental compliance
"step-by-step", in manageable and affordable increments.
