Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

The idea behind Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is to measure the environmental cost of a product over its entire lifecycle: from raw materials extraction through manufacturing, transportation and useful life to final disposal.

Design for Environment (DfE) introduces the idea of designing the product to achieve a net reduction in the environmental cost over its lifecycle:
	By using fewer, less toxic, more easily recyclable and/or renewable materials
	By consuming less energy and water and producing fewer greenhouse gasses
	By reducing manufacturing by-products and reusing waste as feedstock
	By discarding less and recycling more of the product at end-of-life
Alternatives Assessment (AA) is a new program from California that will require manufacturers to evaluate "greener" alternatives to their existing products in certain situations:
	By comparing a currently used substance, material or chemical process with a proposed alternative
	By evaluating the public health and environmental impacts across specified life cycle segments
	In order to decide whether to redesign or reformulate the existing product, replace it with a different product, or leave it "as is" until better alternatives become available

To date, there is no regulatory standard for performing a life cycle assessment. The variables and methods of quantification are still being defined.
